Reconstituted Philosophies
Jahan Loh
Using popular ready-to-eat canned food as a medium to convey his take on shifting cultural paradigms of Asian culture, the artist explores consumer culture while delving into his childhood memories. The pieces, which take on animalistic forms such as chicken feet and pig trotters, symbolise philosophically weighted notions of Singapore’s identity, nostalgia and the embodied experience. Furthermore the arrangement of larger-than-life sculptures explores the connect between our interactions with mass-produced items and memory. These sculptural cans are the artist’s way of paying homage to the things he loved as a child, which may be remembered differently by others despite coming from the same sources.
